Hay Versus Haylage. Which is Best for Your Horse?

Its coming up to that time of year again, when the Irish Equestrians are praying for an excellent harvest so that we may have top quality fodder to feed our horses.

The Irish Summers have always been unpredictable, one minute the sun is shining, the next there is a full scale hurricane, usually named after a female (just an observation), wreaking havoc on the newly cut field of hay!

It is this unpredictable weather that has lead the Irish Farmers to make haylage, instead of hay, in recent years. The question is, is this what is best for our horses? With this at the forefront of our minds we went to the Irish Equine Centre and asked Alan Creighton who is Head of the Environment and Nutrition at the IEC, his views on the subject.

You can read Alan Creighton’s Article in the May Issue of Irish Sport Horse Magazine. Alan’s gives great advice on both Hay and Haylage and which is best for your yard, based on your storage facilities and the fodder available to you in your area.
